BACKGROUND: Fire education is currently dominated by drill-based programs, however only a limited number of participants may take part in fire drills. This gap could be addressed by the development of innovative board game-based educational programs. OBJECTIVE: This study sought to compare the effectiveness of board game-based and drill-based fire safety education programs in improving nurses' fire safety knowledge, attitudes, and behavior. METHODS: In this quasi-experimental study, 122 nurses were purposively sampled from a hospital in southern Taiwan. The participants were divided into two groups based on their willingness. Sixty-two nurses in the game-based group took part in an hour-long educational board game for fire safety; and 60 in the drill-based group took part in an hour-long fire drill organized by the hospital. The participants' pre- (T0) and post-intervention (T1) questionnaire scores on fire safety knowledge, attitudes, and behavior were recorded. The statistical methods included descriptive statistics and t-tests. RESULTS: After the interventions, both groups had improved safety knowledge, attitudes, and behavior. However, from T0 to T1, only fire safety knowledge was significantly higher in the game-based group than in the drill-based group, and there were no significant differences in fire safety attitudes and behavior between the two groups. CONCLUSIONS: A board game-based fire education program is similar to a tabletop exercise, and drill-based programs more accurately reflect actual circumstances. Both methods can be applied based on the educational objectives and actual educational settings. The results of this study may function as a reference for designing clinical, educational, and academic interventions for fire safety in healthcare settings.

BACKGROUND: Internships in pediatric nursing often reveal that nursing students lack critical thinking dispositions and self-confidence, which are important and necessary for nursing practice. Therefore, preparing nursing students to engage in critical thinking is an important goal for educators. OBJECTIVES: The purpose of this study was to explore whether a teaching model combining the 5E learning model and self-efficacy would be effective in enhancing participants' self-efficacy and critical thinking dispositions in a course on child-friendly care. DESIGN: The quasi-experimental method was single-blind, as the study was conducted with two parallel and unequal groups to address the research questions. SETTING: Two campuses of a university located in Northern and Southern Taiwan. PARTICIPANTS: Fifty-eight participants completed this study. METHODS: Participants completed the pre-test questionnaire in Week 1, after which participants in the experimental group learned via the teaching strategy that combined the 5E learning model and self-efficacy, while participants in the control group were taught the same course via conventional teaching methods. A post-test questionnaire was completed in Week 18. An independent sample t-test was used to determine any mean differences of outcome variables between groups over time. RESULTS: Significant improvements were found in self-efficacy, t (56) = 3.93, p < 0.01, but non-significant results for the outcome of critical thinking disposition t (56) = 0.88, p > 0.05. A t-test was also performed on the four subscales of critical thinking disposition for the two groups, showing that the only difference for overall reflective thinking was statistically significant, t (56) = 2.09, p < 0.05). CONCLUSIONS: The multidimensional teaching strategy introduced in this study is more effective than conventional teaching strategies in improving students' self-efficacy and the overall reflective thinking aspect of critical thinking disposition.

PURPOSE: To describe nurses' views on the potential use of robots in the pediatric unit. DESIGN AND METHODS: A qualitative descriptive design was employed. Semi-structured interviews were conducted with 23 nursing staff who worked in the pediatric unit. The interviews were audiotaped, transcribed, and analyzed using qualitative content analysis. RESULTS: Three themes emerged related to the nurses' views on the potential use of robots in the pediatric unit (1) care impact - advantages, which included: (a) reducing healthcare providers' workload and (b) adequately meeting the needs of pediatric patients and their families; (2) care impact - shortcomings, which included: (a) deficiency of individualized care and (b) reduced employment opportunities for skilled nursing staff; and (3) attitude impact, including (a) lifelong learning and (b) integrating culture and technology to meet pediatric care needs. CONCLUSIONS: Robots' application may ameliorate the overall quality of pediatric care, allowing for better apportioning of nurses' time and energies to focus on direct patient care and reducing nurses' workloads. However, some possible disadvantages need attention, including robots' inability to provide genuine human touch, demonstrate human emotions associated with pediatric care, and exhibit cultural sensitivity. It is desirable to embed nursing practice needs in the advanced functions of robots and thereby ensure safe, reliable robotics suitable for pediatric care usage. PRACTICE IMPLICATIONS: The findings can be used as a reference for nurses encountering challenges in working with robots, and for lifelong learning needs for pediatric nurses.
